Behind the Curtain: How Parents Can Make Recital Day Memorable

Young dancers and their families all over the world look forward to this special time of year.  For many this year-end Recital is a culmination of the dance seasons worth of lessons and hard work.  For some, it might be the first time they will experience the thrill (and accompanying nerves) of the stage lights, and for others, possibly the last time they will step foot on a Recital Stage. No matter what phase of your child’s dance journey you are in, there are definitely some things you as a parent can do to make it a positive experience for everyone.

One of the most important things a parent can do to support their dancer along this Recital journey is to stay informed!  Read emails, note important dates in your calendars and bring your dancer to all of their classes and rehearsals.  Then, on show day, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the performance and this special time with your family.

Here are a few tips and questions to ask yourself to make sure YOU (the parent) are prepared for the Empire Dance Center’s Annual Recital:

  1. Do you have your tickets?  Avoid the lines and pre-purchase yours at the studio.

  2. Has your performer tried their costume on?  Make sure that you don’t need to make any alterations and that you have all of the pieces.

  3. Confirm the complete costume instructions to make sure you are prepared with your other requirements for shoes, tights, socks, hair, etc. and purchase if necessary.

  4. On Recital Day, arrive at the auditorium early so that you will have time to secure your seats, have your performer go to the bathroom and get everyone settled – remember there is NO reserved seating – it is first come, first serve.  The doors will open ½ hour before your scheduled showtime.  We do our best to start the show promptly at the scheduled time.

  5.  Although you are allowed to use your phone or personal camera to take photos and video, please do not set-up any tri-pods as this presents a safety hazard and no flash photography is allowed. As a reminder, as part of your Recital Participation Fee, you will receive a full downloadable video of the entire show to enjoy for years to come.

  6.  Please come prepared to support the efforts of our Dance Company Booster Club and purchase a flower bouquet for your performer and goodies from our concession stand… We appreciate your support.

  7.  Read your emails for further instructions about Dressing Room Assignments & our Performer Finale to close each show.

  8. Know that pre-performance jitters are very common, and try to assure your dancer that they are prepared, safe and they will be among friends, classmates and their teachers!

  9. Finish the day with lots of bravos, applause and loving support for everyone involved (including you) – WE DID IT!
